Why Math?

WHY STUDY MATH?

Answers the age-old question, "When are we ever going to use/need this?

  • To use it.

  • Yes, you actually can "use" some of what we learn in every day life--for managing personal finances & investments, shopping, home maintenance projects, forming political or social opinions, in leisure time activities & hobbies, or on the job in your career.

  1. As a stepping stone.

  • Some things you learn just so that you have the fundamental knowledge necessary before learning more complex, and possibly more relevant, topics.

  1. As a test or "proving ground".

  • Sometimes employers just want to find the "best and brightest", or those who have "learned how to learn", figuring that "Hey, if they can pass statistics or calculus, I can certainly train them to do this job".

  1. As exercise for the brain.

  • When LeBron James <or insert famous athlete of the day> goes to the gym and lifts dumbbells or does pushups, he may ask himself, "When am I ever going to have to use this in a basketball game?" (he won't), but he does it to make himself stronger.

  • Math makes your brain stronger!

  1. For the fun of it!

  • Some people, like me, actually enjoy escaping life's pressures with a good, satisfying math problem. Look at the popularity of Sudoku puzzles.
