Population project
an Integrated Algebra & Geometry Lesson
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING CLAIMS:
A.) Lefty Lindross claims that the world is over-populated. He says that if you stacked every person in the world end-to-end that they would reach to the moon and back over TEN times!
B.) Ros Wing claims that there is plenty of room for humanity. In fact, she says that if you gave everyone in the world an apartment measuring 30'x30'x20', that all of these cubicles could fit inside just the Grand Canyon!
**Use the internet to research this. Use a separate piece of scratch paper (which you will turn in) to plan out your solutions. Then show your work, label appropriately, and enter your final answers in complete sentences in the spaces provided.
1.) What is the average distance to the moon from earth?
2.) What is the approximate population of the world?
3.) What is a reasonable estimate for the average height of a human?
4.) If stacked end-to-end, about how many times would the world's population reach to the moon and back?
5.) What is the approximate volume of the Grand Canyon (approximate, using its average width x length x height)?
6.) What is the volume of a 30'x30'x20' apartment?
7.) About how many of these apartments then would fit into the Grand Canyon?
8.) Write a paragraph about who is right, Lefty or Ros, or both, or neither?
